WHOLE WHEAT
Jalapeno & Cheddar
Sandwich Buns!
My mission lately has been to make all of the bread products my family eats. I make my own biscuits, tortillas, muffins, and even my own bread. That all being said, I don't have the best bread making skills --maybe because I am not patient enough-- but it still gets done.
I was looking for something out of the norm the other day when I stumbled upon a recipe from my friends over at the Taylor-Made Ranch. HERE IS HER RECIPE FOR Jalapeno Cheese Beer Buns. She made it look way to easy (check out the AMAZING tutorial with step by step directions) and lets face it...it says beer and cheese in the name so it HAS to be good.
I absolutely LOVE "borrowing" recipes from my buddies since they are an amazing template for swapping out items and inspire me to cook something new. So, with my laptop in my hand, I set out to re-create her recipe with some of my touches as well!
- I swapped out the beer for good old baking soda and water. I WILL be making these with beer soon! I just didn't have any! Feel free to use sprite!
- Made it with only whole wheat flour
- Instead of mixing in the toppings, I put them on top so some of them would be plain buns for the kiddies!
Here is my version!
Looks like a lot of ingredients but it really isn't hard! |
- 2 t yeast
- 1/4 cup warm water
- 1 T agave syrup, honey, or sugar you choose!
- 1/4 cup coconut oil
- 2 seeded chopped jalapenos
- 1 cup shredded cheese
- 1 12-oz bottle or about 1 1/2 cups of beer or clear soda - room temp and flat
- 4 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
- 1/2 t salt
1. Proof your yeast as indicated on package.
2. I am not as patient as most so I put all of the ingredients into my mixer at the same time. You will want to use a dough hook if you have it (notice I am supposed to have 2 on my mixer...if you know where the other is, let me know!)! Mix on a low speed for about 5-7 minutes. If your batter is looking too "wet" add a few tablespoons of flour to stiffen it up. YOU CAN HAND MIX THIS IF NEEDED! Just make sure everything is incorporated well!
3. After your dough is forming a nice ball, place it in a lightly oiled bowl and cover to let it rise until it doubles in size.
4. After it doubles, punch it down and cut the ball into 12 sections. Place these on an oiled sheet and cover with plastic wrap. (spray the plastic wrap with cooking spray and put that side down to prevent sticking) and let the buns rise for about an hour.
Topped with sauteed veggies, feta, and my "faux" burger! |
5. Bake buns for 15-20 minutes at 350 degrees.
I HOPE YOU ENJOY!
FINISHED PRODUCT! |
